Charles Watkins Obituary

In Loving Memory of
Charles Edward Watkins
05.12.1946 ~ 07.15.2025

With heavy hearts, we announce the passing of Charles Edward Watkins, a beloved son, brother, father, grandfather and friend, who departed this world on July 15, 2025, at the age of 79.  Born on May 12, 1946 in Austin, TX, Charles lived a life filled with love, laughter and countless memories.

Charles was the firstborn child and son of Rufus Watkins and Cutie Lee Jackson Sandles, who preceded him in death, along with his sister Mona Glass and Donald Ray Watkins.  He is survived by his loving children, Chantel Watkins Martin (Ronald) and Caleb Ouku Watkins.  His sisters Phyllis Thurman and Jacquelyn Kay Sandles Jackson.  He was a devoted step-brother to Clarence Sandles and a proud grandfather to Chantel’s children; Amanda, Alexus, Albanee and Aprille Martin.  Caleb’s children, Caleb Watkins II and Christopher Watkins.  Sharon’s children, Kristen and Nicholas Johnson and Charles’ children, Willamesha and Chance Johnson.  He also leaves behind 12 great-grandchildren, a host of nieces, nephews and cousins, who will carry his memory in their hearts.

In 1967, Charles met Ruby Johnson and embraced her children, Sharon and Charles, as his own, earning the affectionate nickname “Big Charles”.  Together with Ruby, he welcomed his own children, Chantel and Caleb, further expanding the love in his ever-growing family.  Later, in 1983, he formed a bond with Vickie Allen and her son William Charles Allen, whom he supported and cared for, even after their marriage ended in 1994.

Charles’s educational journey began in Catholic schools, where he developed a passion for photography, music and studied various subjects at Dallas County Community College.  His love for music would become a defining part of his life; he played the piano and sang beautifully, sharing his musical talents with his family, many of whom inherited his love for the art.

Charles proudly served as a Military Policeman in the United States Air Force, earning an honorable discharge that reflected his dedication to service.  He then embarked on a successful career at General Motors Company, where he worked for over 30 years before retiring.  His commitment to his community continued as he worked part-time at the StarPlex in Fair Park in Dallas, for an additional 20 years, while also teaching courses for the Texas Parks and Wildlife Department on Hunter Safety and Animal Identification.

As a long-time parishioner of St. Elizabeth of Hungary Catholic Church in Dallas, Charles found great fulfillment in his role as a Cantor and choir member, using his voice to uplift others.  His dedication extended beyond the church; he was a Certified Master Conservationist who volunteered his time with the Texas Parks and Wildlife Department, where he shared his love for nature and the outdoors.  He was so proud to have fulfilled his goal of visiting all of the Texas State Parks.  An avid outdoorsman, his passions included fishing, hunting, birdwatching and learning about trees, plants and animals.  His adventurous spirit even took him to Costa Rica, where he contributed to efforts in identifying new species.

Charles was known for his impeccable style, always arriving at gatherings sharply dressed with a radiant smile.  His warm and inviting personality was matched only by his love for music, he always had a lovely song ready for any occasion, touching the hearts of those around him.

Charles battled cancer with grace and resilience and we would like to extend a heartfelt thank you to our cousins Charlotte Reed and Andre Jackson, who selflessly cared for him in his time of need.  We would also like to extend a thank you to Cornell Yancy, Charles’ godson, for his handsome Homegoing Service wardrobe selection.

As we celebrate the remarkable life of Charles Edward Watkins, we remember him not only for his accomplishments and the love he provided but also for the joy he brought into every room he entered.  We will carry his legacy of love, kindness and music forward, ensuring that his spirit lives on in all of us.

Rest in peace, dear Charles.  You will be profoundly missed but forever cherished in our hearts.
