Paul Laurence Mitchell was born in Pittsburg, Texas, and entered this earthly journey to Ella Mae Evans Mitchell and Ollie Zemra "O.Z." Mitchell, his parents, on December 26, 1945. Both his parents were educators. They also had a daughter, Janice Mitchell Heath. Family members that have preceded him in death were his parents, his maternal grandparents, Warren Prince Mitchell and Ida Hamilton Mitchell, and the beautiful Wanda Faye Austin, mother of his lovely eldest daughter, Chandra Mitchell Roney.
Paul attended Carver School in Omaha, Texas, the only African American school in Morris County. His father, "O.Z." Mitchell was the school principal. Paul graduated from High School in 1964 with high honors and was among the first African Americans to attend the University of North Texas in Denton (UNT). He graduated from UNT in 1968 with a degree in Math. After graduation, Paul moved to Ft. Worth and became a math and biology teacher at Paul Lawrence Dunbar High School in Ft. Worth, Texas. He taught in other public schools until he was called into military service. Paul was drafted into the US Army, served from 1971 to 1975, and was sent to Germany, where he took computer classes. He served his country with pride and honor. After returning home, Paul enrolled in the University of Texas in Arlington to obtain a master's degree in biology.
Paul married the love of his life, Joyce Marie Davis, on June 6, 1969. Out of this union, three beautiful children were born: Roslyn Yvonne Ferrell (Patrick); Derrek Shawn Mitchell; and Carlos Vaughn Mitchell (Kimberly). Paul always made family gatherings special for everyone. Paul was also a die-hard "Dallas Cowboy" fan and loved to play Spades.
Paul's death came too soon. He transitioned forever to be with the Lord on Tuesday, March 11, 2025, at 7:44 pm. He often said he wanted to come back home and fix up the old home place.
