Richard Harold Evans, 77, was born on February 12, 1947, to the late H.V. and Sarah Ann Evans. He was the youngest boy of nine children. Richard accepted Christ at an early age and remained a devoted member of the Mt. Mitchell Church of Christ in Omaha, Texas, until his health began to decline.
EDUCATION
He completed his primary education in the Daingerfield Independent School District and graduated from J.J. Rhoads High School in 1966. A remarkable athlete, Richard excelled in football, basketball, baseball, and track. He served as the quarterback for the 1964 football team, leading them to the State Finals, just short of the championship title. As the starting point guard for the basketball team, he and his older brother Donald helped secure the State Championship in 1964, making one of only two state titles in Daingerfield basketball history, the other being won in 1977. Richard earned All-State honors in football (1965), basketball (1964 and 1965), and baseball (1964).
CAREER
In his senior year, 1966, Richard was drafted into the United States Army, serving in the Vietnam War before receiving an honorable discharge in 1968. He remained a proud U.S. Veteran throughout his life. Following his military service, he enrolled at Bishop College in Dallas, Texas, where he continued to play basketball and baseball.
To know Richard was to appreciate his quick wit, sense of humor, and infectious laughter. He was friendly and welcoming, never meeting a stranger, and he cherished the company of his friends and family. His presence will be deeply missed by all who knew him.
Richard was preceded in death by his parents; brothers E.V., L.V., and Charles “Peter”; and sisters Chestine Reese, Linda Evans, and Reta Singleton.
